If you’re a frequent traveler, you must have found yourself at some point catching up on some sleep. Sleeping on a plane is rarely comfortable, unless you’re travelling in business or first class and sleeping on a train is always downright lousy.

Unless you’re one of the lucky few who can sleep anywhere, it’s unlikely you’ll sleep well but choosing the right pillow for your needs can certainly go some way to helping. I’ll be reviewing a bunch of travel pillows in the search for the best option. Read on to find out.

J Pillow – Travel Pillow Review

pillow for travelingWinner of the best British invention of the year 2013 (an achievement in itself given Dyson’s success) and the number one selling travel pillow in the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Japan is the J Pillow. Shaped like a J, hence the name, the J Pillow offers support for the back and side of the head as well as the neck and chin.

It’s used by placing your head on it to the side – one edge wraps around the back of your head to provide support, the other edge supports the side of the head, whilst the ‘shaft’ gives neck support. Finally, there’s a hook shape edge at the bottom which fits under your chin to stop your head falling forward.

It’s often said the simplest designs are the best and everything has been thought of here. It’s comfortable and small and packs away into a small space for sticking in your hand baggage. Also, it is available in a range of colours and whilst priced in line with those regular U shaped pillows that fit around your neck we’ve all seen in airport stores it’s an innovative product that addresses some of the problems associated with standard U shaped travel pillows.

Despite this, there are some that suggest its way too small to work as intended. If you have a larger frame, you may find it’s a touch too small.

NeckSnug Memory Foam Pillow Review

NeckSnug™ Luxury Memory Foam Travel PillowWhilst the NeckSnug is shaped just like all those travel pillows you see around in airport stores, instead of being filled with polyester fibres like the majority, this is stuffed with memory foam. It reacts to your body heat to mold to the shape of your neck and shoulders, allowing you to find the most comfortable position for sleep.

Comfort is good and the plush microfiber cover is soft to the touch and is removable and machine washable, which is a nice extra. It’s very lightweight, foam doesn’t weigh much after all and comes with a handy elastic strap that can attach to the handle of your suitcase.

Unlike the J Pillow, this fits all shapes and sizes of necks due to its design, so larger travelers needn’t worry it won’t fit them! What’s more, the manufacturer realizes that everyone is different and if you’re not completely satisfied, they offer a 100% money back guarantee.

The Comfort Master Review

The Comfort MasterAnother U shaped design pillow that uses memory foam is The Comfort Master. It packs all of the same design features as the NeckSnug – thermo sensitive memory foam that reacts to body heat to mould to the shape of your neck and head, features a machine washable soft microfiber cover and is small and lightweight making it great as a travel companion.

It also features that same elastic carry strap that can hook on to your suitcase handles for easy portability.  Really, the only differences between this and the NeckSnug are the price – The Comfort Master is around $10 – $5 cheaper – and the warranty. This has the same money back guarantee, but also features a further 5 year warranty. It’s available in three colors too.

Aeris Memory Foam Pillow Pillow Review

Memory Foam Travel PillowYet another memory foam, U shaped design pillow, priced at just below $30, the offering from Aeris falls right between The Comfort Master and the NeckSnug in terms of price.

There are a few things that set it apart though. First of all, it features ventilation holes which increase comfort by maximising airflow and preventing the typical build-up of heat usually associated with memory foam type products. Built into the pillow on short toggles at the ends of the U shaped design are ear plugs – a nice touch for a travel pillow where you’re likely to be trying to get that all important sleep in a pretty noisy environment.

There’s no elastic strap to attach to your suitcase, but it does come with a handy travel bag. In addition, it has all the features of the NeckSnug and The Comfort Master; it’s lightweight, incorporates a removable and machine washable outer cover and carries a lifetime warranty. It’s a no brainer. If you’re looking for a U shaped travel pillow, it simply makes sense to opt for this – it has all the features and more at a great price.

Aeris Memory Foam Pillow Pillow Review

Travel Pillow for CarWith a different design entirely, the AirComfy looks something like a cartoon shaped bone. Rather than being a pillow that you rest your head on, this is a neck pillow, which is great as it keeps your neck straight and in line with your spine whilst allow your head to rest in the softest substance of all – air.

It has a built in strap that attaches to the seat back or headrest of a typical car, train or airplane seat which prevents it slipping out of position just as you get comfortable! Possibly one of its best features though, its foam filled but also allows a little inflation or deflation, depending on how big and firm you want it to be. Not only that, but it doubles up as a lumbar support pillow. When you’re finished with it, it packs down into a supplied pack for easy carrying.

Conclusion

Choosing the right travel pillow is something of a personal preference. However, there are couple of products that stand out here.

If you have used a U shaped pillow in the past and are comfortable with it’s design, the memory foam pillow from Aeris offers everything you’ve come to expect from such a design with a couple of nice extras. Foam tends to get hot, so the ventilation holes really do help and the earplugs are a nice touch.

If you’re looking to try something different, the J Pillow approaches things from a unique perspective. It offers support to the back and side of your head as well as to your neck. It’s soft, small and portable and comes with a fair amount of assurance in that it won an award.

Finally, the AirComfy is a more traditional shape and not only is it inflatable enabling its user to find the perfect level of support and size, it’s also usable as a lumbar support pillow. What’s more, it’s the cheapest option reviewed here (especially for those on tight budget). It offers the best mix of value and comfort so that’s exactly where my money would go.
